FAQ's

Can I go inside of the lighthouse?

No, Nubble Lighthouse is off limits to the public. The only way the individuals can go to the Nubble is by entering our raffle (check out details on our website).

Why is it called the Nubble?

The name "Nubble" comes from the small, rocky island on which the lighthouse sits (a "nub" of rock).

Does anyone still live on the island?

No, no one has lived on Nubble Island since the lighthouse became automated in 1987.

Is Nubble Lighthouse still an active lighthouse?

Yes, Nubble Light is still an active aid to navigation maintained by the Coast Guard. It is automated and there is a part-time lighthouse keeper.

How did Sohier Park get its name?

Sohier Park is named after William Davies Sohier (pronounced Sawyer). Sohier had purchased the land in the late 19th century and later donated the property to the Town of York. This lead to the town establishing the area as a park.

When does the park close?

Sohier Park is open all year round, so you can enjoy views of Nubble any time, any season. There is no parking from 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM.
